π AI & Defensibility for Startups
Next Tuesday, we will share our conversation with Maxime le Dantec, Partner & co-founder of Resonance, one of Europe's most active venture capital funds.
π ChatGPT in Action - At Resonance, the use of ChatGPT goes beyond simple interaction. It is a valuable asset for studying the competitive market, assisting in content creation, and will soon optimize information extraction from conversations with the founders they meet.
π Creating Defensibility with LLMs - The key lies in leveraging data to refine underlying models and create a unique and differentiated user experience. With the advent of open-source LLMs, tech companies now have the opportunity to create personalized and defensible products by, for example, focusing on user data privacy.
π Specialization Dominates - While the versatility of OpenAI's models is impressive, the future seems to be in specialized AI models. This approach improves cost, efficiency, and accuracy. In each sector, products will be built on AI models tailored to specific use cases.
π§ Is this another 'hype'? - Does the enthusiasm around AI resemble the crypto fever of a few years ago? Not really, according to Maxime. AI is already a reality and has enabled the emergence of companies like Jasper and Midjourney with millions of active users.
π For those of you who want to dive deeper, Maxime recommends newsletters like Exponential View & Benedict's newsletter (two newsletters we also love at millefeuille).
π For the full profile, stay tuned for next Tuesday!
πΈ Bite-sized News
π Top news of the week with our take on the matter, handpicked by us.
π€ Baidu Challenges ChatGPT-4 with Ernie 4.0 - Baidu unveils Ernie 4.0, aiming to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT-4, showcased by CEO Robin Li with promising capabilities in a live demonstration.
π‘ The move highlights China's ambitions to lead in AI, amidst tighter regulations compared to the US.
π‘ Baidu's broader AI integration plan into its services shows a glimpse of how AI can revolutionize search engines and other digital platforms.
πΏ AI's Growing Thirst for Energy - Rising demand for AI could lead to energy consumption equating to that of an entire country, warns academic Alex de Vries.
π‘ Increased efficiency in AI tools might drive more usage, leading to a potential rise in energy demands, exemplified by ChatGPT's daily energy cost of 564 MWh.
π‘ The projected surge in AI-related electricity consumption by 2027 could match the annual needs of countries like the Netherlands or Argentina, necessitating mindful application of AI technologies.
π©Ί ChatGPT Surpasses GPs in Adhering to Depression Guidelines - ChatGPT showcases potential in aligning with depression treatment standards better than general practitioners, a study unveils.
π‘ The AI tool reflected high compliance with clinical guidelines, offering objective, data-driven insights for depression diagnosis and treatment, devoid of discernible biases.
π‘ Despite promising results, researchers emphasize that AI should complement, not replace, human clinical judgment, underscoring the need for further examination of risks and ethical considerations.
ποΈ AI Unlocks Secrets of Ancient Herculaneum Scrolls - Luke Farritor, a young researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, leverages machine learning to decipher texts from ancient charred scrolls, earning a $40,000 prize from the Vesuvius Challenge.
π‘ This breakthrough showcases AI's potential in unraveling historical mysteries, bridging the gap between the past and present through technological innovation. π‘ The collaborative effort in the Vesuvius Challenge illustrates a commendable fusion of academia, private sector, and global talent, speeding up the pace of historical discoveries.
π¦ Google's AI and Traffic Lights - Google is utilizing AI to enhance traffic light efficiency, analyzing data from its Maps app to suggest timing adjustments for reducing wait times and emissions.
π‘ The initiative, dubbed "Project Green Light", is already showing promise with a significant reduction in stops for drivers, making traffic flow smoother in several cities across the globe.
π‘ By leveraging vast amounts of data from Google Maps, the AI-driven adjustments aim not only to improve traffic light timings but also to potentially decrease pollution and make roads less frustrating for drivers and pedestrians.
π₯ Today's Special: Vision - The Eyes of ChatGPT
π Every week, we introduce you to practical tools and use cases that you can try out for yourself.
This week, we're looking at ChatGPT Vision, the new feature of ChatGPT that expands its capabilities beyond text by allowing interaction with images.
This feature has been available in France since last week and is accessible to ChatGPT Plus users.
Now, ChatGPT not only understands and generates text but can also analyze and interpret images (via its new model GPT-4V) with precision rivaling that of humans.
π‘ What's impressive about ChatGPT Vision is its versatility. It can explain complex diagrams, identify animal or plant species, decipher CAPTCHAs, and even generate HTML code from an image. Of course, there are still some limitations, especially in recognizing non-Latin characters.
β Name: ChatGPT Vision
π Description: An extension of ChatGPT that allows AI to analyze and interpret images
πΆ Price: Available to ChatGPT Plus users ($20/month)
